hail the [almost] new era

I bought my first digital camera a few weeks ago, to accompany me on my most recent China trip.

Don’t get the idea that this is going to change anything. My new camera is just a pocket-sized point-and-shoot. I had wanted one for years, but until recently there was nothing on the market that met all of my criteria: a fast, wide-angle prime lens, sturdy metal construction, good low-light performance, and no perceptible shutter lag. It has proven convenient and reliable, and I am very happy with it. But I’m not giving up my film.

It’s a Ricoh GR Digital III. I was trying to avoid turning this post into a product review, but I can’t say enough nice things about it. As point-and-shoot digital cameras go, it’s pretty flawless, assuming you’re comfortable working only in wide-angle. As a tool, it differentiates itself by being my only camera which can actually fit in my pocket (albeit not comfortably).

Your having a digital camera satisfies my need for instant gratification, so I am completely on board with you having one! Although I think your film photos are lovely, it was pretty great to be able to see your pictures from China as soon as you got back!
